Web shop business: What will be the trends in 2008?

The software firm Hybris has compiled a trend list for this market based on the results of several surveys. The web shop market indicated sales of 10.9 billion euros in 2007 in Germany alone. More clarity and simpler operation were both mentioned, along with the following points:

1. In 2008, catalogues are enjoying a revival! Both online and printed. Product information is available in integrated scrollable online catalogues.

2. Another “hot topic” this year is multi-national web shops. Preferably with international payment possibilities and the automatic calculation of various taxes and delivery costs.

3. The customer is king: In the service area everything from bonus pages for regular customers to personal consultation will be the big hit. From self-designed t-shirts to self-portrait coffee cups, shops that provide “extras” are at an advantage.
Online markets: increased figures

In order to better evaluate the medium and to utilize data for an internet presence, we would like to present the newest data based on a German survey.

General internet use:
• 59 % of all Germans use the internet (38.5 million people), 31 % of Germans are online daily. On average, they are online for 59 minutes a day. 51 % utilize a fast DSL connection

Consumer reaction to online advertising:
• 20 % let themselves be directed by internet advertising, 18 % of men and 9 % of women felt that such advertising was positive, 13 % of internet users are particularly aware of online ads

Consumer purchase behavior online / shop design
• within the last 12 months, 74 % have made online purchases, 46 % of all web users shop online regularly (eg. travel).
• 85 % of all women greatly value delivery conditions (73% men as well); for 76 %, security is the most important criteria.  61 % expect detailed product descriptions, 46 % attach special importance to test results and consumer certification.
43 % were bewildered by inferior shop design and around 50 % terminate their online transaction before a sale is completed!

Internet use in companies
• 89 % of all companies have internet access, 59 % manage their own internet presence and 41 % use it for publishing additional product information. 25 % provide interactive elements on their homepages (eg. a shop or customer support). Especially interesting: 60 % of all firms use the internet for business to business transactions.

Online shopping: What is in demand and what is sold?

The conversion quota – the e-commerce magic word. This percentage indicates how many of sought-after products are actually sold. The numbers are form 2007 from Mediascope Analysis of the European Interactive Advertising Association:

Concert and festival tickets were highest rated with a conversion quota of 75 %. Travel tickets, books, and clothing were rated at over 70 percent. The share of consumers who bought a mobile phone online increased by 23 percent to 38 percent. Music downloads, car accessories, furniture, foodstuffs and computer games registered two-digit conversion quota growth.

The greatest expenditure was registered in the Scandinavian nations of Denmark, Sweden and Norway, while the British bought the greatest number of articles. In Germany, France and Italy, costs per article were lower, which seems to suggest a key role played by the internet in the search for bargains.

gavelCreating Retail Business Online

Online auctions have allowed people with little business experience to become successful retailers in a mail-order business of their own. It has also sparked the growth of many sideline businesses that may or may not be of service to an auction seller. Many successful sellers started out cleaning out their attic or garage and eventually made selling on auctions a full-time business and career.

There are numerous success stories about people who were able to make the move from rags to riches by selling a variety of merchandise through online auction sites. There are tricks to making money through online auctions and a few people are making money selling what they claim are the secrets to selling on an auction. Essentially, there is no real secret or trick to making money by selling merchandise through an online auction.

It’s really a simple concept, in finding a line of in-demand merchandise that you can buy at rock bottom process and sell at a higher price. No secret, just common sense. However, if it really is that simple, there would be lot more auction millionaires than you read about in the newspaper. Finding the next hot item can take a certain gift in being able to track the trends in everything from clothing to home appliances. Chances are, by the time the average auction seller comes across a really hot seller, it’s too late.

They may buy a large inventory at a reduced price hoping to cash in on the item’s demand, and wind up with no bidders and a lot of stuff in their basement. If you think you have the best thing since pockets on a shirt, only buy a couple of them for your inventory. Use a good quality picture and spell-check your write up and start the bidding at a reasonable price. If the items sell quickly, it may pay to pick up a few more of them and continue selling them.

Once you find a line of merchandise that sells extremely well, stay with it. For example, if you can get your hands on sports memorabilia at a really reasonable price, regardless of where the team is located, it can prove valuable on an online auction. Your buyers are coming from around the world and there is a fan for every team in every state and in most countries. Do not limit the team merchandise you sell based on your geographic location. If people in the team’s area want the merchandise, it can probably be found in the team’s sport shop.

Whatever you do when selling at an online auction, do not make the buyer wait for weeks to receive their merchandise. If you promise the merchandise will be shipped within so many hours after receipt of the payment, ship it faster. Insure the expensive items at your cost if the buyer chooses not to pay for the option. A couple of bucks for insurance can save a lot of aggravation later.
